Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre

Starting point for this hiking adventure is the small mountain village El Chalten which was built in 1985 out of a climber base camp. The hikes to the view point “Laguna de los Tres” offering a just amazing view over the Fitz Roy Massif and the one to the Torre lake are the most famous once in the surroundings of El Chalten. During these days you can experience the manifold flora and fauna of Patagonia and this incredible granite peaks. Nights are spent in Hosterias in El Calafate and El Chalten and in tents during the hike.


The Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre hike goes along well-maintained hiking trails and the glacier hiking is adapted to persons without experience on glaciers. Nevertheless, some hiking experience and the willingness to forego some luxury is good to have. The daily walking times are between 7 and 10 hours. During the hiking days, participants have to carry their own backpack (excl. camping equipment). The rest of the load (including for example camera, rain jacket, box lunch etc.) is carried by participants. Minimum group size of 2 persons required for departure.


The program starts with your arrival in El Calafate. Please let us know where you will be travelling from so we can help you make arrangements if you need.


  • Arrive to El Calafate and transfer to the hotel.

  • Drive from El Calafate to El Chalten. In the afternoon you have some leisure time to relax before the days in the national park. There are also some short hikes around El Chalten you can do on your own. In the evening introductory briefing with the guide for the details of the following days and dinner.

  • We are leaving in the morning from El Chalten taking the trail which leads us up to Laguna Capri. This will also be the place for tonight’s camp so we can leave gear before continuing the hike to the viewpoint Laguna de los Tres from where we will have an astonishing view of the Fitz Roy’s mountain range. Hike back to Capri Lagoon where we will spend the night.

  • After breakfast we will begin our descent into the beautiful Valle of the “Madre and Hija” lagoons, which leads us to the Cerro Torres valley. Once in the valley a short hike through the forest takes us to our campsite. From here we continue our hike to the Maestri viewpoint, from where the legendary climber used to eye-up his climb of the Cerro Torre in the ‘50s.

  • We start our day with a short walk to Laguna Torre to cross over the Fitz Roy river on the zip line, then walk through a beautiful forest to finally reach Torre Glacier. Once on the glacier, we will walk with crampons. For those who wish practice some ice-climbing have the chance to do so. Once back at camp we have a rest before continue our descent by returning to El Chaltén.

  • Bus drive to El Calafate. Transfer to El Calafate Airport.
