Big Circuit Paine

The „circuito“ as it is called is a classic hiking tour in the world-famous Torres del Paine national park. During this trek you walk around the entire massif and do some side trips into stunning valleys like “Valle Francés” and “Valle Ascensio”. With hikes of 5 to 12 hours a day and overnights in tents, the circuit around the Paine massif is challenging, but its more than worth it for experienced hikers. The circuit is not very busy so much of the time you have the awesome scenery all to your self. The starting point for this trip is the city of Puerto Natales in the South of Chile. With less than twenty thousand inhabitants and a distance of 250 kilometers to the nearest Chilean city, it feels like a small island in the middle of the vast landscape.

This tour is an excellent choice for experienced hikers who are prepared to forego some luxury in order to experience one of the best hikes in the world. During the hiking days, porters will carry 5 kg per person as well as the tents to reduce the luggage load for each person participant. The rest of the load (including for example camera, rain jacket, box lunch etc.) is carried by participants. Minimum group size of 2 persons required for departure.

The program starts with your arrival in Puerto Natales. Please let us know where you will be travelling from so we can help you make arrangements to get to Puerto Natales if needed.

  • Arrive to Puerto Natales and transfer to the hotel. Dinner, briefing and equipment check together with your guide for the upcoming hiking days.

    Accommodation at Hostel Amerindia.

  • Today the adventure starts. Together with your guide you drive to Torres del Paine national park. The first hike of the circuit to the Seron camp (approx. 4 hours) has some ups and downs and is technically easy. A perfect day to get into hiking mode!

Accommodation in tent at Seron camp.

  • After breakfast you start walking towards Refugio Dickson (refugio = mountain hut). During the next days you will only see few people in this remote part of Torres del Paine national park. After reaching the top of the „Paso del Viento“ (pass of the wind) which lives up its name, you´ll be treated to a beautiful view of Paine lake, Paine river and the plains that were once formed by retreating glaciers. Finally you have to cross this partially marshy plain to reach today’s campsite on the shore of Dickson lake after a 6-hour-walking day.

Accommodation in tent at Dickson camp.

  • Tomorrow a big day awaits, so today we take it easy and take our time to enjoy this savage part of the national park. In the early afternoon we will reach Los Perros camp and have the possibility to do another short walk to the Punta Puma glacier or just relax at the campsite enjoying some hot tea.

Accommodation in tent at Los Perros camp.

  • Today the „royal stage“ of the circuit (approx. 10h) is on the menu. In the early morning we leave Los Perros camp and start the uphill walk to the John Gardner pass, the highest point of our hike. On the way up to the pass we cross dense forests of southern beech before we reach rocky ground. Once we reach the pass, we can enjoy a panoramic view of the enormous Grey glacier. An incredibly wonderful place, if not the most beautiful one in the whole national park! From the pass a long downhill walk starts, always with a view over the Grey glacier and Grey lake, until we reach our next campsite.

Accommodation in tent at Grey camp.

  • After the challenging day we had yesterday, we will take it easier today. During the morning we start our walk in the direction of Lodge Paine Grande. This hike is technically easy and takes about 4 hours. We´re entering an area of the park that is more regularly visited. In Lodge Paine Grande you can even enjoy a glass of Chilean wine or a typical Pisco Sour in the in-house bar with a view of the Cuernos del Paine and the turquoise Pehoe lake! What more do we need?

Accommodation in tent at Paine Grande camp.

  • During today’s hike from Lodge Paine Grande to Refugio Los Cuernos we´ll make a detour to the French Valley. This rough and narrow valley is dominated by the east wall of the Paine Grande Mountain on one side and the Cuernos del Paine on the other side. On the way up the valley every now and then you can hear ice calving off from the French glacier. With a little luck we might even get to see one of these ice avalanches!

Accommodation in tent at Cuernos camp.

  • We hike along the deep blue Nordenskjöld lake with the Cuernos on our left to Torres campsite. It´s an easy walk and we can enjoy the beautiful flora. When the weather is nice, from the campsite you can already catch a glimpse of the granite towers that we´ll climb up to see tomorrow.

Accommodation in tent at Torres camp.

  • Todays hike is one of the highlights of the tour. After an uphill walk of about 4 hours through the forest and over a steep moraine we reach the shore of a small glacial lake. Right in front of us three solid granite towers soar thousands of feet straight up into the sky. It’s a moving moment and a perfect end to the tour. We walk the same way back to Hotel Las Torres where a transfer is waiting to take us back to Puerto Natales. Farewell dinner in Puerto Natales.

    Accommodation at Hostel Amerindia.
